A family is a dynamic system, often seen as its own living and breathing entity in and of itself. Each individual within the family is also a part of this system. There are a number of ways that the therapists at Roswell Counseling can assist families. The therapist can see and help the entire family, with all family members present at each session, in order to work with the family as a whole. At other times, the therapist can see different members of the family separate, depending on the issues that are presented. The therapist will tailor sessions for each family, depending on what that family needs.
Family therapy often incorporates activities that create a shift in the family dynamics. This allows the therapist to introduce new ways of communicating, and it helps the family to build healthy ways of interacting, collaborating, and working through issues.
For families with young children, the therapist will often incorporate “filial play therapy,” which allows the counselor to help the parents become an important part in the child's play. Parents are taught how to use play as a way to communicate with their child, encourage their child, and help their child continue their development in expressing and working through their issues. This process benefits the child as well as the parent-child relationship. The counselor can use many different ways to facilitate this process, including games, projects, art, and many more. These activities allow the therapist to gain insight into the family dynamic, as well as facilitating a family process to work through issues faced.
